Michael Yarboro, Eagle Scout, March 30, 2009
Michael became involved in scouting with Pack 101 as a Cub Scout. He earned his Bobcat, Bear, Webelo, Arrow of Light and God and Family. He crossed over to Troop 101 at age 10. He has served his Troop in many leadership positions including Assistant Senior Patrol Leader and Senior Patrol Leader from March 2008 until March 2009. Michael is currently the Patrol Leader for Venture where he is restarting the Venture Patrol for Troop 101’s older Scouts. He completed the last Junior Leadership Training Course offered in 2004. Michael is a Brotherhood Member of the Order of the Arrow and Chapter Chief for the Battleground District. In the summer of 2007 Michael joined Jamboree Troop 218 for a two week trip to the 21st World Jamboree in London England. In the summer of 2008 he was part of Trek 716-P2 to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico under the leadership of Mark Gantt where they completed a 98 mile trek to the top of Mount Baldy which reaches over 12,000 feet high. For the summer of 2009 Michael will be joining Troop 132 under the Leadership of Doug Mungas for his second high adventure trip. They will travel to Northern Tier High Adventure Scout Camp located in Canada and the north woods of the United States. They will spend a week canoeing in the wilderness.
Michael was a staff member of the 2008 National Youth Leader Training Course. He will also participate in the 2009 NYLT course as Assistant Senior Patrol Leader of Programs.
During Michael’s scouting he has earned 51 merit badges.
For Michael’s Eagle Project he refurbished and doubled the size of Crowder’s Mountain State Park’s existing Orienteering Course. He and the project volunteer’s spent over 200 hours re-constructing the existing points, adding new markers and constructing and adding markers to the 13 new points. Each new 6’ foot post then had to be carried to its Globally Scanned location in the forest of Crowder’s Mountain State Park and set. The Orienteering Course covers several miles. Michael completed the project and went before the Eagle Board on December 2nd 2008.
Michael is a junior at Shelby High School where is a member of the National Beta Club, Latin Club, Science Club and The Young Republican’s. He is also a member of the Shelby High School Orchestra which was chosen as one of three High School Orchestra’s in the Nation in 2009 to Perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Michael has been selected to represent Shelby High School as a Junior Marshall during the 2009 Graduation.
Michael is the grandson of Dr. and Mrs. Gene Yarboro of Shelby and Faye Early and the late Thomas Early of King Mountain.
