Fall Camporee 2009

Troop 101 Battleground District 2009 Fall Camporee Winners!

Fall Camporee 2009 for the Battleground District was held at the Shuford property in Newhouse, NC on October 23-25. Twelve local Boy Scout troops from Cleveland County competed for the annual Flay L. Cook Trophy in events that included knot tying, map and compass skills, fire building and pioneering projects. Andrew Dills, Eagle Scout and assistant scoutmaster with Troop 413, was camporee chief for 2009 and supervised the activities. The recipient for this year's camporee trophy was Troop 101 First Baptist Church, Shelby, placing first in knot tying, second in map and compass and second in height measurement. With a reactivated Venture patrol spearheading the troop's effort, Troop 101 positioned themselves early in the competition with a series of outstanding performances. After winning first place, our Venture Patrol Leader, Eagle Scout Michael Yarboro, single-handedly completed the knot tying event in 1 minute 58 seconds, said scoutmaster Al Hansen. Even though it was not officially scored, it was the fastest time over everyone who competed. Venture Patrol performed well, but we'll work to improve and strengthen our troop's skills overall. Despite relatively young leadership in the troop, assistant senior patrol leader Tyler Myers coordinated the participation of the troop's four patrols and managed the successful completion of each patrol's pioneering project while juggling the responsibilities for maintaining a functional campsite. Myers disclosed, It was hard but a great learning experience. Competence was demonstrated in map and compass skills when Venture patrol came within sixteen feet at the terminus of the orienteering course. Height measurement ended in a three-way tie and Venture patrol took second in a pacing competition tiebreaker, coming within seven inches of a premeasured distance. During the field competitions, senior patrol leaders from each troop graded campsite organization and pioneering projects for every participating unit. Hansen noted, Wolverine patrol did an outstanding job and lashed a camp table, working way after dark. That kind of effort is uncommon with boys their age. After tabulating the scores from the events and inspections, the camporee trophy was presented the following day at the closing flag ceremony. Andrew Dills announced the results and Troop 101 received the award, an accomplishment this unit was unable to obtain for ten years. Camporee staff member Jim Myers observed, There's a lot of talent in the troops that form this district. The adult leadership in our county accomplishes the task of training these boys in outdoor skills and the coalescence of talent and training was evident at this camporee.
