Summer Camp proved to be another outstanding year for Troop 101. After attending the Father’s Day morning worship service at First Baptist Church, Troop 101 departed for a week at summer camp. Several boys, unable to afford the $175.00 camp fee, were sponsored by members of the church. “Economic hardships have effected families in our troop”, said Al Hansen, scoutmaster of Troop 101. “We are blessed to have a supportive chartered organization and these sponsors contributed more than money. They provided a unique opportunity for personal growth that will benefit these boys into their adult lives.” For the sponsors, the reward for their generosity was quickly returned. Troop 101 earned the Best of Bud Schiele Award, the highest accolade presented each week of summer camp, the Clean Campsite Award, first place in the catapult competition, first place in first aid, and third place in the canoe race. This year the troop celebrates 80 years of scouting in Shelby and Al Hansen sums up the superlative effort from the beneficiaries of the sponsorships. “Their performance is a reflection of their gratitude.”
